How Solo Travelers Take Amazing Photos

how solo travelers take amazing photots

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to work with some rather incredible photographers.

I’d like to share some of their tips with you so you can ramp up your photography game.

So how do solo travelers take amazing photos?

Before we take a look at how to up your photography game, I want to share these facts with you.

According to statistics over 80% of the awe-inspiring photos we see on Instagram are taken with smartphones or entry-level cameras with kit lenses.

So if you don’t have a professional camera, don’t feel under pressure to buy one.

This photo was taken in the Maldives, on my iPhone 7

1. FIND YOUR PHOTO INSPIRATION

  • Look on Pinterest for inspirational photos that suit your location.
  • Start with one or create a number of boards with location photos and styles so you have them on file when you need to refer to them.
  • Look on Instagram, screenshot the images you would like to reproduce and add them to a photo folder on your iPhone or add to your Pinterest boards.

2. CHOOSE YOUR LOCATION

  • Road trip
  • Beach
  • A city street
  • Sky-diving
  • A local cafe
  • At home
  • Under water

3. STYLE YOUR PHOTOS

The photos on social media look so effortless and natural. Most however, have been set up down to the smallest detail.

  • What props do you need?
  • What style and look do you want to achieve?
  • Where will you be taking photos?

4. cheet sheets

If you’re shooting fashion on location, and you want to achieve a particular look. Print the pictures you want to copy or tear out from magazines so you can easily style and copy the photos on location.

If you have a friend taking pics for you, they can refer to the tear sheets and correct pose and angles.

5. wardrobe & Hair

The easiest way is to nail wardrobe and hair is to choose beautiful photos from social media and copy them as closely as possible.

6. LIGHT IS EVERYTHING

Morning light and late afternoon light are the most flattering because it’s not directly over-head casting harsh shadows.

When the sun is low it will eliminate shadows and blow out your skin for a more flawless complexion.

If you’re taking photos during the day you are going to have to deal with harsh light. To eliminate unflattering shadows on your face, position yourself so you have some overhead cover.

For example- under an awning, a beach umbrella, a doorway, or a hut.

7. the selfie stick

Solo travelers take amazing photos with selfie sticks.

I used to cringe at the mention of a selfie stick. If you feel the same way, my advice to you- get over it and start using this uncool little device with newfound love.

I have taken the most amazing photos surrounded by people. Are they rolling their eyes and calling me a goose? Absolutely! But ignore the world and get the awesome shot.

8. THE TRIPOD

A tripod is essential. They come with a blue tooth remote, so easy for taking selfies and family pics. 50% of my travel photos have been taken using a tripod. It never leaves my bag. Many tripods double as a selfie stick.

9. A GOPRO

Solo travelers would not be able to take amazing action photos without a GoPro, the King of the action cameras.

Jumping out of a plane? Scuba diving with sharks? Making a surfing video?

A GoPro is essential for shooting any action selfies or underwater activities.

10. A GoPro 3 way mount

This mount can be used as a camera grip, extension arm, or tripod for ultra versatility for your GoPro.

11. A CAMERA

There is such a massive array of camera gear out there it’s hard to decide what is worth investing for a travel camera.

I thought buying an expensive camera would give me amazing photographs but its not the case. Just like the best surfboard won’t make someone a pro surfer.

I rarely use my professional camera kit because it’s so large and I just don’t want the hassle of hauling it around when I’m traveling.

When you travel, it’s essential to have a camera that you don’t have to be precious about. I recently bought a Fujifilm camera, it’s small, made of metal, waterproof, and it’s a beautiful retro design.
